Gaze across the unruffled surface of the Sea of Moon as you stand on the shore of the Sheraton Tahiti and you will see Moorea, the quintessential dream of Polynesian Paradise, often thought to be James Michener’s mythical “Bali Hai.”

A ten-minute flight or 30-minute catamaran ride from Tahiti will bring you to this pristine island of extraordinary white beaches, volcanic peaks, vanilla and pineapple plantations and a beauty and remoteness essentially untouched by modern man.

ACCOMMODATION: Opened in October 2000, Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa is the perfect realization of a South Seas fantasy. Here the outside world fades quickly as you relax in a private, air-conditioned bungalow rising above a spectacular 10-acre lagoon.

A viewing panel in the floor reveals jewel-colored fish beneath your feet. A ladder drops from your landing into the warm lagoon, should you feel tempted to join them for a swim. On land, each fare (Tahitian for house) stands amidst luxurious gardens or on the beachfront. And each bungalow features a private outdoor shower with unparalleled views.

Each of the hotels 54 over-water bungalows and 52 garden and beach bungalows are equipped with all the modern conveniences found in a world-class hotel, including special touches like ceiling fans and claw-footed tubs. Especially popular with honeymooners, the "island on an island" over-water rooms are connected by winding, wooden walkways built on stilts over the lagoon.

HOTEL FACILITIES & SERVICES: Your concierge will be happy to arrange any number of diverse activities during your stay, each designed to help you discover the essence of Moorea. Guests can visit the Opunohu valley by 4x4, rent cars or scooters, or enjoy a circle island tour by bus. Or, perhaps horseback riding along breathtaking trails or mountain bike rentals for touring the island at your own pace. Hotel guests have free access to tennis courts and a fitness room.

The Arii Vahine Restaurant at Sheraton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa provides yet another delightful over-water experience for Sheraton guests, for breakfast & dinner. The menu tempts the palate with French, American and other international gourmet creations like poisson cru (fresh fish marinated in coconut milk), grilled barrimundi (a local favorite) and lobster. The restaurant's signature dessert is an award-winning coconut soufflé.

The Eimeo (sunset) Bar, adjacent to the Arii Vahine Restaruant, offers a stunning panoramic view, classic and island cocktails, and expert barmen who are more than happy to make a recommendation from their extensive list of fine wines and champagnes.

The Toata Bar - named after an island coral - is a memorable place to spend an afternoon or evening. Built over a natural aquarium, it appears to "float" on water like an "infinity" pool... with a sweeping view over the lagoon and Moorea's majestic peaks.

Located near the swimming pool and the beach, the Rotui Bar & Grill provides a casual, waterfront option for lunch or dinner, as well as the perfect setting to enjoy refreshing exotic drinks all afternoon. Rotui serves elaborate platters of fresh vegetables and tropical fruits, capturing the flavors indigenous to the island.

Should you feel disinclined to venture from the comforts of your room or bungalow, room service will be happy to bring you breakfast, lunch, or dinner as you contemplate the lagoon and Moorea’s volcanic peaks from your terrace...
